FIG AND Lilith entered the terminal. Thanks to the dribblers, Natasha had been easy to follow. They entered the café as one of the thugs deftly lifted Natasha from her feet. He smothered her into his chest. Crew cut and thick jowled like a bulldog, he had a face incapable of a smile.

The second wrapped his arms around the first in a group hug, with Natasha sandwiched between. Like overweight ballet dancers, the pair shuffled her out of the café.

“You handle those two,” Fig called out to Lilith. He pointed at Yefim. “That guy must be her handler. I’ll go after him. He is the one more likely to know what is going on.”

Yefim blinked at Fig’s words. He sprang from the table, surprisingly agile for a man his age. Fig reached out as he passed, but was only able to snag a button from the handler’s coat sleeve. Walking rapidly, the older man followed the other Russians out of the coffeehouse.

By this time, most of the customers were on their feet, eyes wide with astonishment. More people involved would only get in the way, Fig thought. He had to do something to divert them.

“Okay, cut,” he called out. “It’s a wrap.” He scanned the room to make sure he had everyone’s attention. “Thanks, everyone for making the scene seem so realistic. Don’t look for the cameras and sound booms. They were hidden to maintain realism. But if you stick around until noon, you can snag some free tickets to see the premiere.”

An excited buzz and laughter exploded from the patrons. Fig raced out the café doors and saw Yefim leaving the terminal and board a shuttle bus. As the doors closed, Fig ran to a taxi waiting nearby and jumped into the backseat.

“Follow that bus!” he called to the cabbie.

“The rent-a-car shuttle? Why?”

“Just do it. You’ll get a big tip.”

The bus and taxicab pursuit arrived at the car lot almost simultaneously. As Fig emptied his wallet to the cabbie, he saw Natasha’s handler toss some paperwork into an ‘Instant Checkout’ box. The agent ran to a car, climbed in, and headed toward the airport exit.

As Yefim sped past him, Fig read the car’s license plate. He watched the Russian agent merge onto the airport circuit-way and vanish out of sight. Fig scowled. The bastard was getting away. Almost as an afterthought, he opened his clenched fist. It still contained the handler’s coat button.

‘Once together, always together.’ Like a returning boomerang, memories of the Hilo nursery came flooding back. He recited the incantation that reconnected the button with the coat. Yes, that would work. But he needed transportation, too. And Lilith was nowhere to be seen.

Of course! Fig slapped his forehead. He hurried toward the rental office.
